Dear Thoreau Community:
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year at Thoreau. To our returning families, it is certainly great to have you back. To those students and parents who are new to our wonderful school, I hope that you will quickly feel at home and become involved in activities and events through our loyal and supportive PTA. I look forward to a school year where each one of our students experiences academic growth and personal success as a Golden Eagle.
On Thursday, August 22nd, students will have the opportunity to visit Thoreau for two events:
I invite all 7th graders and new-to-Thoreau 8th graders to attend our New Student Orientation on Thursday, August 22nd from 9:00AM-11:30AM. This is an opportunity for students to pick-up their schedules, meet their teachers, make new friends, and practice navigating the building. Please click here for the informational flyer. I invite all students and parents to attend our Open House on Thursday, August 22nd, from 3:00PM–5:00PM. Students who attend the Open House will be able to pick-up their schedules and tour the building. In addition, students will be able to receive their locker assignments and combinations as long as the required form listed below is completed, signed by a parent/guardian, and returned. There is no formal program for this event; however, parents will also have the opportunity to join the PTA, pick-up pre-ordered school supplies, purchase Thoreau spirit wear at the school store, add funds to student lunch accounts, and drop-off medication with the school health aide.
The after-school registration form is the one completed form required for a student to be issued a locker. This form is located in the Back to School packet that was mailed home and is also available here. Any student who does not return the after-school registration form on Thursday, August 22nd, should bring it to the main office to receive his/her locker assignment the first week of school.
In addition, please also complete the emergency care form electronically through the @email section for FCPS 24-7 Learning Parent View. Instructions for how to do this can be found here. Please complete the form prior to the start of the school year.

- Identification of military-connected students form
- Family Life Education (FLE) opt-out forms (7th grade) (8th grade)
- Wellness screening opt-out form (8th graders only)
I also would like to share three websites for parents to view student information, course curriculum, and to add lunch money or pay various student fees online.
The SIS ParentVUE provides parents with access to student information, including attendance, report cards, class schedules, gradebook, course history, discipline, health, and school information.
FCPS 24-7 Learning (a.k.a. Blackboard) provides access to view your child’s available courses and content, bus stop information, after-school program information, and academic and career planning via Family Connection. You can also update your child’s emergency care information via @email.
This site allows parents to view lunch account balances and meal purchases, setup automatic payments, make payments from the mobile app, and has no convenience fees. Balances and current meal account will automatically transfer over from last school year. This site is also used to collect various student fees such as PE uniforms, curricular materials fees, field trip fees, etc.

Students requiring medication, an Epi-Pen, and/or an inhaler must turn in the printed form and medication with a parent to the school's clinic aide.
Information for Directory & Commercial Purpose Opt-Out In accordance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), FCPS has provided opt-out forms pertaining to student records and privacy. Forms need only be signed and returned to exempt your child from any of the activities. FCPS has an Opt-out booklet that has more information about these forms.
Information for School Counseling Opt-Out A request to opt-out of academic counseling, career counseling, and/or personal/social counseling will become effective on the day it is received by the school and will remain in effect throughout the student’s K-12 career in FCPS, unless the opt-out request is rescinded by his or her parent in writing.
The purpose of this form is to identify and support homeless students in FCPS. Please be assured that the information on this form is confidential.
Free and reduced-price meal applications are mailed to all households annually. If you do not receive an application in the mail or if you experience an income or household size change, an application is available at your local school or Food and Nutrition Services site linked above.
Student health and accident insurance is available. Applications are available online or may be picked up in the front office.
