Thoreau and Navy Federal Credit Union's Partnership
Thoreau and Navy Federal Credit Union Did you know that Thoreau MS and Navy Federal Credit Union have worked together for 28 years? Click here for the FCPS schools news article about this amazing business partnership. The partnership’s programs are many and varied, all with the same goal, to enhance student motivation and learning. Thank you for all you do, NFCU!
Our partnership activities include:
Mentor Program. Students meet weekly with Navy Federal volunteers, who provide guidance, tutelage, and moral support. School counselors carefully match employees to students to optimize the mentor-mentee relationship—helping to ensure successful and rewarding outcomes.
Pen Pal Program. Thoreau’s English Speakers of Other Languages students are paired with Navy Federal volunteers who serve as pen pals. Through correspondence, pen pals keep in touch with each other, which provides students with opportunities to develop their writing and language skills. Just before the end of the school year, Navy Federal and Thoreau pen pals meet for the first time at a pizza party held in Navy Federal’s cafeteria.
Annual Art Exhibit. Every May, Navy Federal honors Thoreau’s young aspiring artists by displaying their work during a month-long art exhibit. Employees vote for their favorite works of art and ribbons are awarded. Employees, visitors, faculty, students, and parents enjoy and appreciate the students’ artistic talents. Navy Federal also hosts a reception for the young artists and their families with refreshments, awards, and musical entertainment provided by the Thoreau Ovation Ensemble.
Recognition Program. Every quarter, Navy Federal recognizes Thoreau students who receive all “A”s on their report cards by hosting a pizza party and handing out certificates of academic achievement. Additionally, Navy Federal applauds service excellence and math achievement by annually recognizing a Thoreau student and faculty member who exemplify the qualities of service and volunteerism within the school and/or community and a Thoreau student who demonstrates math achievement. Plaques, certificates, and monetary awards are presented during the school’s year-end award ceremonies.
Project Neighbors Program. Every December, school counselors provide Navy Federal with information about Thoreau families in need. Divisions throughout the credit union “adopt” a family for the holiday season and receive the names and ages of family members and their “wish lists.” Employees purchase and wrap much-needed items. The gifts, along with food baskets, are delivered to the families by Navy Federal employees.
Donations to the School. Throughout the year, Navy Federal provides Thoreau with support services such as printing student planners, the literary arts magazine, and the programs and posters for our musical and drama productions. Navy Federal also donates supplies such as binders, furniture, computers, and other equipment to the school, and presents a monetary gift to the school each fall to support ongoing learning opportunities for faculty members.
