SOL Information

Please find all the SOL information you may need for this Spring's SOLs on our website, including calendar, bell schedule, asynchronous classes during SOL days etc.

Cafeteria Now Serving Hot Lunch 

Food and Nutrition Services is pleased to be able to make hot lunch available to Thoreau middle students beginning on May 11th. Lunch includes fruits, veggies, milk, and a hot entree, and will be assembled into a easy carrying container so that students may take them to their designated dining area. Breakfast and Lunch menus for Thoreau can always be found here


Outstanding Teacher Nominations

Nominations are now open for the Outstanding Teacher Awards! To submit a nomination for a Thoreau Middle School Outstanding Teacher, please complete the nomination through this Google form. You may only nominate one teacher at our school.

All that is required for a preliminary nomination is a paragraph or two about how this employee demonstrates exceptional work.

Eligibility: Teachers or librarians working at Thoreau MS during 2020-2021.


The deadline to submit a nomination is May 21

The VIP Summer Program

Your teenager is a Very Important Person. Sign them up for a summer of fun and leisure at Value in Prevention (V.I.P.) Camp! V.I.P. Camp is designed to encourage teens to develop healthy and positive recreation interests and features a wide variety of leisure activities and programs. 

The FCPS VIP Summer Program for rising 7th, 8th and 9th graders will be held in-person at Glasgow Middle School this summer! Please visit our website for details and registration form, including eligibility\y, dates, time, meals, transportation, etc.

Monday – Check & Connect Update

There will be no Check & Connect on May 10, 17, 24, 31 or June 7th. Students are to use the time provided on Mondays to complete asynchronous assignments provided by teachers. We appreciate your flexibility with this change and are hopeful students will use this time to complete any missing work or prepare for their week ahead.

Vision and Hearing Screening Schedule For Virtual Students

If your child is attending school virtually and you do not want them to get screened, you may decline screening services by filling out this google form.

If your child is attending school virtually and they will be coming to school to get their vision and hearing screening done, these are the dates and times:

Purchase your 2020-21 yearbook now for  $40 at . Your child’s spring portrait or selfie will be published in the yearbook. You don’t want to miss out the memories of this historic school year!


Lost Laptop Chargers and Laptops

If your child's laptop has been lost or stolen, please inform your child's counselor or a school administrator immediately before purchasing a replacement device. If by chance you have lost your laptop charger, a replacement will be available for pickup at Thoreau once you’ve purchased a replacement through MySchoolBucks. If you need more assistance in purchasing a laptop charger please submit a ticket here.


Grab and Go Meals

All FCPS students (regardless of age) are eligible for free grab and go meals, as well as other county children that are eighteen (18) years and under. Parents/caregivers picking up meals for children should let staff know how many children's meals they need. Adults may purchase meals.

As a reminder, it is important to follow social distancing guidelines. Be sure to stand a minimum of 6 feet apart from others and practice regular hand washing, including prior to leaving a residence to pick-up meals, upon returning home, and before consuming food. Please wear a mask when picking up meals.  

A bus stops daily (Monday - Friday) at Thoreau from 11:58am - 12:08pm. Please visit the FCPS website for more information about meals and pick up sites.

PTANews From the PTA

Books by Visiting Author

As part of celebrating Thoreau’s 60th anniversary, the PTA welcomed author Marc Tyler Nobleman this week for a virtual presentation and workshops. If your family is interested in signed copies of his books, they may be purchased through the PTA’s online shop. Book orders will be fulfilled by Vienna’s independent book store, Bards Alley, and the author will sign and send name plates to affix inside the books. Orders must be placed by May 11, with delivery/pickup at school by the last week of classes. To review the books available and place an order, go to the PTA website and select “View Store” from the menu near the top of the screen.
