Thoreau Middle School serves students in grades 7 and 8. Known for its diverse student body and strong academic programs, the school emphasizes both academic excellence and personal growth. Thoreau offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports, music, and clubs, to support well-rounded student development. The school is dedicated to fostering a positive learning environment and preparing students for success in high school and beyond.

Henry David Thoreau Middle School is named after the great American author, poet, and philosopher. A famous quote of Thoreau is, "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams." Thoreau Middle School tries to embody the spirit of that great statement. It fosters an academic environment in which all children learn and are challenged to their highest levels of academic achievement

In 2023-2024, Thoreau English Learner Progress and Proficiency rates increased by 25.5% compared to 2022-2023

Thoreau Middle School’s Symphonic Band was chosen to perform at the Virginia Music Educators Association convention in November. This is a huge honor and Thoreau is one of only two middle school bands selected from across the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Thoreau is an active and integral part of the town of Vienna and Madison High School Pyramid. The school also collaborates closely with Oakton and Marshall High Schools to provide a smooth transition for 8th graders moving into their assigned high schools. 

The Vienna community focuses on a small-town feel within the larger suburban world of Fairfax County. 

Madison Pyramid schools are committed to the “One” campaign to nurture a culture of kindness in our schools, community, and world. The campaign focuses on how we treat others and spreading a caring culture of kindness throughout our community. 

Navy Federal Credit Union has been an Ignite Partner since 1989, making this the longest business partnership in FCPS! Initiatives include a mentor program, a pen pal program, Project Neighbors, and a direct donation to the school to support families in need.  

Every summer, Thoreau staff design a full-week induction program called Excellence in Action for rising 7th graders and new to Thoreau 8th graders. On average, 75% of our new students attend, making this one of the most successful transition programs in the county.
